The Byrds – Summerthing, Allston 1970

The Byrds – Summerthing, Allston 1970

Summerthing, Ringer Playground, Allston, Boston, MA – July 27, 1970

Roger McGuinn (guitar, vocals)
Clarence White (guitar, vocals)
Gene Parsons (drums, harmonica, vocals)
Skip Battin (bass, vocals)

Note: this was engineer Dinky Dawson’s first concert with the Byrds, and it turned out that due to a defective PA part (a faulty stereo splitter), the sound was heavily distorted at times. This nearly cost Dawson his job with the band. One can imagine how angry McGuinn was at him.

Roger McGuinn’s Thunderbyrd featuring Gene Clark and Chris Hillman – London 1977

Roger McGuinn’s Thunderbyrd featuring Gene Clark and Chris Hillman – London 1977

The Hammersmith Odeon, London, England – April 30th, 1977

Roger McGuinn (guitar, vocals)
Rick Vito (guitar, vocals)
Charlie Harrison (bass, vocals)
Greg Thomas (drums, vocals)

With Gene Clark and Chris Hillman on tracks 9-10-11

Roger McGuinn’s Thunderbyrd, Gene Clark’s K.C. Southern Band and The Chris Hillman Band embarked on a European tour in the spring of 1977 (ill-fated, as Clark and Hillman quit the tour after a couple of days, flying back to the USA and leaving McGuinn alone to finish the tour). They played two nights at the Hammersmith Odeon in London. Both shows were recorded by the BBC, and are the sources from which the “Three Byrds Land In London” double CD from 1997 was compiled.

This is Thunderbyrd’s concert from April 30th (including three Byrds tracks with Gene Clark and Chris Hillman), before the recording was tampered with, first by the BBC before the broadcast, and later for mixing the double CD.

1. Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd - Lover Of The Bayou (5:07)
2. Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd - American Girl (4:42)
3. Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd - Mr Spaceman (3:08)
4. Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd - Golden Loom - Band Intro (5:00)
5. Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd - It's Gone (3:47)
6. Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd - Chesnut Mare (5:43)
7. Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd - Dixie Highway (4:32)
8. Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd - Shoot 'em (5:33)
9. Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd with Gene Clark and Chris Hillman - So You Want To Be A Rock 'N' Roll Star (3:24)
10. Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd with Gene Clark and Chris Hillman - Mr Tambourine Man (2:36)
11. Roger McGuinn's Thunderbyrd with Gene Clark and Chris Hillman - Eight Miles High (4:57)
