John York
Foley (born 1946) replaced Chris Hillman as the bass player in The Byrds. But
he did have a career before that, and also after he left them. He stills writes and performs today,
as a solo artist, as well as in a duo with Barry McGuire and in a trio as The
Jangle Brothers with Chad Watson and Billy Darnell.

Thank You I don't have much of York solo I really appreciate it.
Cheers, James
The story of John York in the Byrds is a somewhat painful one. When he replaced Chris Hillman, the 'new Byrds' seemed complete, and judging from his participation in the early concerts from this group, thye Byrds had a new songwriter, a good bass player, a competent high harmony and an alternative lead singer. I saw this group once and they were quite good. Unfortunately, as we all know, York didn't last long, and it's a pity as he would have added more to the Byrds than Skip Battin did. This concert is like a throwback to the 60s and 70s. York's voice is a 70-year-old voice, the songs are quite competent (did he write them?) and the length just right. York will never be considered as a major performer but at least he was a pretty good musician overall and, as I said, would have been a good addition to the later Byrds if he hadn't had issues with the direction of the band. I read an interview with York recently in which he admitted his attitude then was 'stupid' but he had to live with the consequences and is still around playing music. I wish him well.
I really like all of Steve's comments which are not only comments but complete little reviews. Certainly not all of us have the same opinions. I think John York developed to a real songwriter much later than his stint in The Byrds. His first high-class record was Claremont Dragon which dates from 1999. Even if some of Skip's songs may not have fitted well into the Byrds' sound, he had more creativity at that point.
I never saw the Byrds at their time, but managed to see Skip four times in different incarnations and John York two times. Be sure he is a really nice guy!
Btw., this concert can be seen on YouTube in its entirety.
Thank you to Rockingbyrd for all he does for us!
I'm sorry that I don't comment more often, but English is not my mother tongue and my last lesson was in 1971 :-)
Thanks a lot RB. How comes so little talk has been heard about John York?
