Thanks for the Gene and Roger & Gene shows. It's hard for me to believe that 20 years have gone by.

A very poignant concert, for a number of reasons. First of all, the venue--a rather small place with a small audience for a singer/songwriter who never caught on after leaving the Byrds despite the fine songs he had written and performed. It is an intimate concert, but a bit anachronistic in 1989, and exclusively for old fans. Second, since Gene died two years later, this show is like a review of his entire career without offering anything new. A closing out, so to speak. The man was slowly dying at this point, and that adds a special tinge of sadness to this concert. As for the setlist, well, Gene has a vast repertoire of original songs and interesting covers, so there are a lot of things that have to be left out. I have no objection to the songs he chose, and his performance here is pretty good, considering the shape his body was in due to years of abuse. It is interesting to hear his version of Eight Miles High, since he wrote the basic song. I have heard post-Byrds versions of the song by all the original members, and it is surprising how many different interpretations have resulted. All in all, a poignant concert, as I said. Geno was always a promising artist, but tragic in the end. Thanks to Dave, whoever he is, for providing this concert, and to Rocking--Byrd for making it available to the rest of us.

Steve,
Gene was in pretty rough shape at this show. He had a cold, and looked thinner than I'd ever seen him at any of the shows I'd seen since '77.Big difference from this show and the one the previous year, in which he was a lot more upbeat.Too bad, what a wasted talent.
