Another interesting compilation, covering almost all versions of the Byrds. Most of this has been around before, and I'm sure fans are familiar with most of the songs, but it's nice to have it all on one unit. The Beefeaters stuff sounds very much like the Beatles, which is no surprise, and the Sweden tracks show that the original (minus Clark) Byrds could do their songs live pretty well. Especially interesting are the tracks by the final live version of the Byrds (excluding the Hillman/Lala addition to fulfill concert obligations). They seem to be taking a different direction, with some heavier drumming and phase-shifted 12-string guitars, which could have been interesting. However, the vocals were inferior due to the lack of a good harmony singer. The Byrds were about harmony throughout much of their existence, and McGuinn doing solo versions without harmony (The Water is Wide--listen to the lovely Crosby harmony on McGuinn's first solo album--and It Won't Be Wrong) sounds a little weird. I like these old tracks and odds 'n' ends, and appreciate the work that went into providing a good listenable experience, so thanks for this and all the rest I may have not commented on but still appreciate.
Thanks RB. Have had the LP for years, but appreciate getting this on cd.
