The Byrds – Live At The Piper Club, Roma

The Byrds – Live At The Piper Club, Roma

May 2, 1968

My LP = Bulldog BGLP 022 (Italy 1988) (yellow vinyl)

This rip = my CD = BGCD 022 (Italy 1988)

Roger McGuinn (guitar, vocals)

Chris Hillman (bass, vocals)

Kevin Kelley (drums)

Gram Parsons (keyboards, guitar, vocals)

Doug Dillard (banjo)

These albums were the first releases of this famous concert. But the tape the bootleggers used was too fast running.

Trivia: « B.J. Blues » is credited to “R McGuinn, J York, G. Parsons, C. White”. This, of course, was the line up that first officially released the medley on the “Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde” LP a year later. Gene Parsons, John York and Clarence White weren’t members of the band yet when this concert was recorded. Which makes us wonder why the credits went to these later members, when they knew the correct line up as it is mentioned on the back covers.

Or, maybe one should wonder why the later members were credited on the Dr. Byrds LP when it’s first been performed by these earlier members.

1. A1 You Ain't Going Nowhere (2:54)
2. A2 Old John Robertson (2:43)
3. A3 You Don't Miss Your Water (3:46)
4. A4 Hickory Wind (4:28)
5. A5 (I'll) Feel A Whole Lot Better (2:04)
6. B1 Chimes Of Freedom (3:06)
7. B2 The Christian Life (3:04)
8. B3 Turn, Turn, Turn (2:43)
9. B4 Medley - My Back Pages-B.J. Blues-Baby, What You Want Me To Do) (5:42)
10. B5 Mr. Spaceman (2:09)

Fresh CD rip - Artwork Included (gatefold cover LP front, back, disc, labels and CD front, back, booklet, CD) (some from Discogs, some freshly scanned from my LP and my CD)

At first listen this actually sounds better than other recordings I have heard of this concert. I think the first few tracks sound quite normal as far as speed is concerned, but starting from I Feel a Whole Lot Better things speed up. The energy in the older songs is quite high, but--sorry, Gram fans--but Parsons' songs sound all the same with a rather monotonous beat. What would this lineup have done had it stayed together for another album? Probably a lot like the Flying Burrito Brothers first album. We'll never know. Thanks for the upload.
