Pause

Except for a couple of regulars who post comments from time to time, and a regular who asks for reups every week, there hasn’t been any comments for a rather long time.

So it seems the interest in this blog has dropped radically. Consequently, I will put the blog on pause for the time being.

Reups will still be fulfilled when time permits

Thanks to the regular visitors and sporadic posters of comments.

Incredibly, “new” Gene Clark concerts keep surfacing from time to time - this one, 36 years after it was performed and recorded.

Another one that was sent in by a visitor. It seems to originate from TD; thanks to the taper and the original uploader and poster.

Audience recording; don’t expect Hi-Fi!

I used Audacity to level, clean and balance the audio files.

Artwork is mine. Pictured on the front cover (left to right) are Rick Roberts, Carlos Bernal, Gene Clark…and John York’s arm, leg and guitar neck.

Acoustic concert

This is one I received from a visitor. Not sure, but it seems to originate from D-A-D. If so, thanks to the original taper and uploader. If not, thanks to them anyway.

Audio files are just as I received them, except I tagged them and I deleted duplicated files.

I added artwork.

The Byrds – Eight Miles High - Live In Nuremberg, West-Germany 1989

The Byrds – Eight Miles High

Live In Nuremberg, West-Germany, September 22, 1989

Do It 005 (West-Germany 1990)

Michael Clarke (drums)

Skip Battin (bass, piano, vocals)

Terry Jones Rogers (guitar, vocals)

Jerry Sorn (guitar, vocals)

At the time this was recorded, original Byrds drummer Michael Clarke owned the “Byrds” trademark so he could hire whoever he wanted and call the band “The Byrds”. That’s what he did when he/they toured Europe in 1989. So what you have here is the original Byrds drummer Michael Clarke, latter days Byrds bass player/vocalist Skip Battin and a couple of unknown hired guns playing songs made famous by the original group. In other words, a rather poor quality cover group.

Notes:

- this LP was posted here earlier but this is a new version with audio files updated and labels and freshly scanned booklet added

- this concert was actually recorded in Siegen, Germany (not in Nuremberg as mentioned on the LP cover)

- track A1 is spelled as "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" in the booklet, "I'll Feel In A Whole Lot Better" on the back cover, and "I'll Fell A Whole Lot Better" on the label.

- track B6 is spelled as "Move Too Soon" in the booklet, and "Move To Soon" on the back cover and on the label.

- the pictures on the covers are from the 70s line up of The Byrds (Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Clyde “Skip” Battin)

- Discogs show a different front cover (included), with a picture of the correct line up but it’s obviously a fan job, not a re-release by the label

- the sleeve hosts an eight page booklet with lyrics and overview of the releases of The Byrds.

- a version exists in a white cardboard sleeve with black and white copies of the original color sleeve (front and back) glued on it or inserted in it.

1. A1 I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better (3:56)
2. A2 All I Really Want To Do (2:48)

The Byrds – Doin’ Auright For Old People

The Byrds – Doin’ Auright For Old People

My original LP = Excitable Recordworks Label 4506-1 (USA 1978)

My CD = Aulica Label A-148 (Italy 1993) (re-titled Doin’ Alright For Old People – Live In Frisco 1978)

Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, David Crosby

The Aulica CD wrongly states that Michael Clarke was there – he wasn’t.

This performance was initially planned as McGuinn, Clark and Hillman solo sets followed by a reunion at the Boarding House in San Francisco in February 1978, but at one point they were joined by David Crosby. They hadn’t played or sung together since 1973 and the magic of the blended voices happened instantly.

This is part of the show only. More complete versions (including solo spots by Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark and Chris Hillman with Kim O’Kelly) were later made available by various CD labels and by online download sites (all unofficially).

1. Roger McGuinn - Jolly Roger (3:18)
2. Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark  Chris Hillman - Chestnut Mare (5:49)
3.
Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, David Crosby - Mr. Tambourine Man (6:45)
4. Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, David Crosby - You Ain't Going Nowhere (4:16)
5. Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, David Crosby - Turn! Turn! Turn (2:51)
6. Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, David Crosby - Knocking On Heaven's Door (5:26)
7. Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, David Crosby - Bye Bye Baby (3:47)

10. Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman, David Crosby - I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better (3:19)

Byrds – Older Than Yesterday

Byrds – Older Than Yesterday

« Old And New Unissued Stuff From The Notorious Mc Guinn, Clark And Hillman Folk & Rock Team »

My double LP = Cocaine Runnin' Round My Brain Records – COC 002/003 (The Netherlands 1980)

My double LP = BBC Transcription Services CN 3007/S (U.K. 1978)

'The record is a special product by Cocaine Records, Postbus 1164, Den Hage, Nederland, celebrating the fifteen years of Byrds career. First edition is printed in 500 numbered copies'

Notes:

Sides A, B and C were recorded by the BBC at The Hammersmith Odeon, London, U.K. on April 30th and May 1st 1977. The back cover wrongly states that it was recorded in September 1977.

The back cover credits the Gene Clark segment to “Gene Clark Band”. The band was actually called “The K.C. Southern Band”.

The back cover credits the Roger McGuinn segment to “Roger Mc Guinn Band”. It was actually by “Roger McGuinn’s Thunderbyrd”.

The back cover credits the last three tracks on side C to Mc Guinn, Clark & Hillman. Actually it’s by Roger McGuinn’s Thunderbyrd with Gene Clark and Chris Hillman. The McGuinn, Clark & Hillman group happened two years later in 1979.

All tracks on sides A, B and C were recorded by the BBC and were later released on a double vinyl LP as part of the BBC Transcription Services series in 1978 in order to be broadcast, including intro and comments by DJ Brian Matthew. The double LP was referenced CN 3007/S and it was titled “In Concert – The Byrds Reunion Special”. It was later bootlegged and released as this, an edited double LP titled “Older Than Yesterday” on the Cocaine label in 1980. Later, it was released as a more complete double bootleg CD titled “Reunion Special” on the Nightingale label. And finally, it was officially released as a more complete double CD titled “3 Byrds Land In London” in 1997 on Strange Fruit Records in the U.K. and in 1998 as an edited single CD titled “3 Byrds In London” on the Mastertone label (licensed by the BBC) in the USA. The Roger McGuinn’s Thunderbyrd segment (including the 3 tracks with Clark and Hillman) was also released on CD on the Oh! Boy label as “Shooting !” in 1992.

What you have here is the 1980 Dutch vinyl bootleg edited from the BBC double LP, with side four being a compilation of rare tracks by The Beefeaters and The Byrds.

The last song on Side Four (Willin’) is said to be from an English concert in 1970; it’s actually from the well known Amsterdam, The Netherlands performance on July 7, 1970.

Strangely, the sides sequence on the actual records is as follows:

Disc 1 Side A (= Side One)

The K.C. Southern Band: Gene Clark, Thomas Jefferson Kaye, Andy Kandanes, Pete Oliva, Billy Shay

The Chris Hillman Band: Chris Hillman, Richard Marx, Al Garth, Calvin “Fuzzy” Samuels, John Brennan, Merel Bregante, Larry Sims, Skip Edwards

Disc 1 Side B (= Side Four)

The Beefeaters: Jim McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Earl Palmer, Ray Pohlman

The Byrds: Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Michael Clarke, Chris Hillman, Clarence White, Gene Parsons, John York, Skip Battin

Disc 2 Side A (= Side Two)

Disc 2 Side B (= Side Three)

Roger McGuinn’s Thunderbyrd: Roger McGuinn, Rick Vito, Charlie Harrison, Greg Thomas with Gene Clark and Chris Hillman on the last three tracks

The Byrds – Hey Mr. Tambourine Man

The Byrds – Hey Mr. Tambourine Man

My LP = No label, no reference number (U.K. 197?)

Matrix:   EP 84  /  EP 85

Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Gene Parsons, Skip Battin

The back cover wrongly credits John York as the bass player instead of Skip Battin.

Recorded during the May 1971 European tour

Amsterdam, The Netherlands, May 15, 1971

Notes:

“Jamaica” is mentioned as track #1 on side A label but it is not present on the A side.

Track A2 is simply titled “Black Mountain Rag” on the label (that’s how McGuinn announces it).

Track A5 is simply titled “Take A Whiff” on the label.

Track A 6 is wrongly titled “Chestnut Mave” on the label.

“Jesus Is Just Alright” isn’t only wrongly spelled “Jesus Is Just Allright” on the front cover, but it’s not even present on the LP.

Track A8 is mistitled “Intermission” on the label.

Track B1: the short jump in sound is as it is on the vinyl.

Track B3 is mistitled “Medly: My Back Paper, B.J. Blues, Baby What Do You Want Me To Do” on the label.

Track B4 is wrongly titled Jamaica II on the label (Roger McGuinn announces it as “Jamaica”)

Wow! So much for accuracy! Couldn’t the bootleggers have some Byrds fan checking before printing and pressing?

The abrupt endings of some songs are as they are on the vinyl.

1. A1 Old Blue (3:30)
2. A2 Soldier's Joy - Black Mountain Rag (simply titled Black Mountain Rag) (1:03)
3. A3 Mr. Tambourine Man (3:26)
4. A4 Pretty Boy Floyd (2:30)
5. A5 Take A Whiff (On Me) (simply titled Take A Whiff) (2:27)
6. A6 Chestnut Mare (4:49)
7. A7 Hold It (mistitled Intermission) (1:08)
8. B1 You Ain't Goin’ Nowhere (2:45)
