Well this series of concerts was quite a surprise, especially McGuinn's participation, as it seems like at least a partial reunion, and considering that Crosby was out of the Byrds at this time and Kelly and Parsons were in effect hired hands, it seem totally appropriate that this should be called a Byrds concert, although I'm sure Crosby, who owns the name and is probably frustrated that he couldn't be a part of this event, would obviously disagree. But they sound like the Byrds, at least on the first two disks. Marty Stuart, a master of the B-bender yet different from Clarence, adds an intentional link between the original Byrds and the Clarence White Byrds. The group is excellent, and equal time is given to Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman and Marty Stuart. From what I've heard so far, Chris Hillman is the star of this event. He sings well and often, and takes on the Gram Parsons songs with respect and ability. He is one of those few artists who improve with age. McGuinn is McGuinn, a genial storyteller and an unpretentious performer. He rightfully cedes the protagonism to Hillman and Stuart and assumes his role in the band with quality and humility. Hillman is much more assertive than when he was younger. Crosby was reportedly unhappy that he was not considered for this reunion, but realistically all he could have provided was a beautiful background vocal. Really, the band is complete. The songs have a somewhat different arrangement, and that makes them have a different effect, for example the honest-believer version if I Like the Christian Life. Sweetheart of the Rodeo was never one of my favorite Byrds albums, but this concert has made me re-evaluate the album. The tribute to this album, with different arrangements and other added goodies make this a special recording. Many many thanks for a real treat!

Thanks for this ,RB. As good as one can get to Sweetheart, without Gram Parsons being there to participate.
