Nice compilation of groups and songs in these recent uploads. This one in particular shows three of the four main versions of the Byrds as a live group. The first two songs sound like they're from Monterey. The group seems to be playing fast, or is the recording? Not as good as the singles, but not terrible either. The rest of the two discs feature mostly the the last, most stable Byrds lineup with Skip Battin on bass. I never saw this group or the original Byrds live, just the John York Byrds, and they were a good live group. I like them best, not only for the variety of songs, but also for the good harmonies, which unfortunately were not well balanced in the Fillmore album nor the two songs on the first disc here. I remember being completely surprised by Get Out of My Life Woman, and it really rocked, as it does here. And I like this arrangement of Jesus is Just Alright better than any other version I've heard. The a capella intro with the drums is perfect, and then the instruments crash in and lead us through a genuinely hypnotic trance. The later versions rocked more, but this one was, to me, much more effective. John York's bass adds a lot to the song as well. As for the rest of the latter Byrds songs, they are varied in quality. McGuinn, who sang most of the leads, was not a very good hard rock singer, especially on Wheels on Fire. but he is good on Lover of the Bayou, although I prefer the live version on Untitled (the studio version is also excellent). Chestnut Mare seems flat--there are better live versions, and even MCH did great versions of this song. What the latter Byrds lacked were great harmonies. The come close on All the Things, Lay Lady Lay and Ballad of Easy Rider, but you can really hear the difference on the early Byrd songs, like Chimes of Freedom and the three-song medley which closes out disc 2. Too bad the Gram Parsons Byrds weren't included--the Piper Club recordings were around, and a couple could have been included to round out the collection. Still, it's nice to have a variety of different Byrds lineups in concert, and I appreciate your making them available.
