I think the Grateful Dead are better than the FBB here. An interesting concert, and what I at first thought was an improbable band pairing, but the Dead did do some country-oriented songs and Jerry Garcia did some fine guitar (including steel guitar, I think) on David Crsby's first album ('Laughing' comes to mind). But while I accept FBB as a seminal band for country rock, it came out of the Byrds first, especially in YTY and NBB. Sweetheart of the Rodeo was more of a country tribute album than a country rock album, and FBB was much the same, although they did pour in more rock at times. A lot of people love Gram Parsons, and good for them. I think he has his moments--and Hickory Wind was a fine song well-sung--but as a vocalist he was not that great. Some attribute an emotional aching to his voice; I think he was just trying to hit the right notes, and not always succeeding. Still, the Burritos were a fine band, a kind of a Byrds spinoff, with Hillman, Parsons, and Michael Clarke. What irritated me was Gram Parsons' posturing about Cosmic American Music. The FBB was not that, but it was a good band nevertheless. But here, the Grateful Dead were still better. Thanks for this interesting upload.
