This pair of concerts is interesting in many ways. First of all, after so many electric years, this is the first concert I remember that didn't feature the Rickenbacher 12-string. In fact, there's no electricity at all, apart from the mikes. Second, the only albums that are not represented in the playlist are Notorious Byrd Brothers, Byrdmaniax and Farther Along. All of his solo albums up to that point have at least one song represented. Third, it's the first time I've heard 6 new songs all at once, even though none of them got recorded. In fact, McGuinn recorded nothing during the 80s after the last McGuinn/Hillman album. The performances are in general good--he seems to be in his element here, although I do prefer him in an electric group, such as the Thunderbyrd band with Rick Vito and Gregg Thomas. The energy seems drained out of a lot of songs--although one could also say the songs are being spotlighted instead of the arrangements. As for the new songs, well, McGuinn seems quite in love, and Camila the obvious inspiration--and perhaps co-author of five of the songs. Melodically, the songs are OK, and some, like Woman, could do with a more electric arrangement. Apparently McGuinn didn't think enough of them to record them for his later albums. All of them are better than Bye Bye Baby, which I always thought was rather sappy. As for the other songs, as I said, they're good samplers of most of what McGuinn has recorded both with the Byrds and MCH and as a solo artist. Not all of them sound good acoustically (Up to Me, Rock and Roll Star), but others, like Jack Tarr and Russian Hill (one of the very best in this collection) sound fine. All in all, a worthy addition to the McGuinn collections uploaded here, with a lot of variety and with the artist in good form. Thanks yet again, R--B.
