A rarity indeed. While the quality of the songs can be irregular at times, Gene still had it, and there's a lot to like here. He re-arranged some material, as he did throughout his career. Particularly noteworthy are Here Without You and, especially,, She Darked the Sun, which was much slower and countrified on the Dillard and Clark album. I like the original, but the changes work here. I was pleased to see that Gene finally made Eight Miles High his own, with a different arrangement from the original, giving it a moodier feel. Also outstanding is Your Fire Burning, one of his best later songs. The covers are somewhat uneven; none of them really make us forget the originals. Silver Raven was a real disappointment, with forgotten lyrics and excessive length. For me, nothing replaces the version on No Other. The band is good, and makes up for Gene's occasional lapses. I think they really shine on Eight Miles High. All in all, an uneven but worthy recording, It's a decent last gig for an artist who deserved much more. Thanks, RB.
