Various Artists (Gram Parsons) – The Chronological Classics 1966-1968

Various Artists (Gram Parsons) – The Chronological Classics 1966-1968

Warped Records 6751 (2011)

The original version this “download only” compilation was wrongly titled “The Chronogical Classics” (without the “lo” syllable). I have corrected that, as well as some mistakes in the liner notes, the artists’ names, the song titles and the tags. The artwork has been updated too.

Thanks though to the original compiler and uploader.

Gram Parsons is on all tracks and sings lead vocals on most tracks.

Most of The Byrds tracks are alternate or rehearsal versions.

Though I'm not a great fan of Gram Parsons, I decided to give this upload a listen, especially since I know so little about his The International Submarine Band (what a name!). I find this pre-Byrds band to be a competent group, with good musicians and vocals, But the material I find rather ordinary, not much different from commercial country mjusic at the time, though with some hints of what country music was to become a few years later. Parsons' vocals are up to the task, but the bar isn't very high. The group's version of Folsom Prison Blues is vastly inferior to Johnny Cash's version on his live album from the same prison. In fact, his voice, while good, doesn't seem to have a personal characteristic, as if he were just trying to imitate the country style as closely as possible. As for the Sweetheart sessions, Parsons is only on some of them, which is weird because there are some songs which might have been interesting to hear in alternative versions; instead, we get various versions of songs which Parsons didn't appear on. Overall, an interesting compilation of Parsons' early career, but I still think he is overrated as both a singer and a writer, partly because of his claims to be creating 'Cosmic American Music', when in reality he was doing traditional country music with some rock elements. Thanks for the upload.

Now you learn everyday. Gram Parsons is not on all tracks on Sweetheart Of The Rodeo! Fortunately, one man's opinion doesn't make it a fact.
