“This program chronicles the history of The Byrds, whose founding members were Jim (later Roger) McGuinn (vocals and guitar), Chris Hillman (vocals and bass), David Crosby (vocals and guitar), Gene Clark (vocals and guitar), and Michael Clarke (drums). Host Dan Neer interviews McGuinn, Hillman and Crosby, as well as Byrds-influenced musician Tom Petty, to trace the group's development as they prepare to release a retrospective collection of their music. Topics discussed include McGuinn's desire to blend folk with rock; Hillman's first impression of McGuinn; how Crosby got to play lead guitar; the rumor that the Byrds didn't play the instruments on their first album; Crosby's views on the assassination of John F. Kennedy; the group's influences from John Coltrane to Ravi Shankar; McGuinn's interest in the possibility of life forms in outer space; the band's 1973 reunion; The Byrds' influence on Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers; McGuinn's sometimes contentious relationship with Bob Dylan; Crosby's departure from the band and his drug dependency; the influence that replacement Gram Parsons had on the group's sound; how film characters from "Easy Rider" were patterned after McGuinn and Crosby; Hillman and Crosby's desire to reunite the group; McGuinn's environmental concerns; and The Byrds' induction into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.”
