Hi Rocking Byrd, thanks for all your great posts,of course some I already have
but I've never asked for a reup before but i seem to have mislaid a download and the disc was missing from my cdr. Could you possible repost the unknown venue gig posted om 22nd December 2016 from 1972. As I remember it was a great show and we shared speculation as to where it was from. Id really appreciate a reup. Best wishes Kevin
Kevin, 1972 unknown has a new link
Thank you so much for the reup of a great if unknown concert. What a great service you give for all Byrds fans!!!! Long may you continue !
Not sure what they mean by " pre-broadcast ". I remember listening to this show live when WBCN in Boston broadcast it. WBCN used to broadcast and simultaneously tape shows from the Boston Tea Party Club. They would latter rebroadcast the show for those who missed it the night of the original broadcast. Sometimes they would edit out some of the tuning and "dead space "from the original broadcast. That was a great radio station in it's day, very much of the time.
This sounds pretty much the same as the other versions of this concert. Nonetheless, it's worth having if you don't have it already. In my opinion, this is the best of the concerts with John York as bassist, and the only lineup of the Byrds I saw live. The setlist is varied and a nice mixture of new and old material, and the performances quite professional. I particularly like both versions here of Jesus is Just Alright. The introduction is original, and the vocals tight and, well, Byrds-like, and the instrumentation creates a moody atmosphere. It's a pity this concert wasn't professionally recorded and mixed and released instead of the inferior Live at the Fillmore concert.
"Live At The Fillmore" was recorded two weeks before this Boston concert, and John York has no lead vocals on it (McGuinn decision?). But here, although a Byrd since September 1968 only, he sings lead on 4 tracks and excellent harmony vocals on most other tracks. York is the most underrated Byrd.
I agree. I saw this lineup in Cincinnati in 1968 and John York stood out more as a personality than either Gene Parsons or Clarence White. His bass playing was quite good and his harmonies spot on, though a little more strident than Crosby or Hillman. Too bad he didn't continue in the band--he was more attuned to the Byrds style than Skip Battin and perhaps a better songwriter, although this is a matter of taste.
