Thank You...
I've just now been able to listen to this, and am on the second disc. I suppose this is what McGuinn's concerts were like recently until Covid-19, and I have several observations. First, McGuinn dips mostly into the Byrds catalogue for his setlist. Is this a recognition that his solo career isn't too memorable? I think he has done some very good solo songs, but he doesn't do many of these. Second, he's been doing the Folk Den religiously for years, and has done some fine versions of traditional songs on his website and has even released several CDs of folk songs. Yet they barely appear in his concerts. Too bad. I would expect at least a small section in his concerts dedicated to traditional folk songs, but he rarely does them. Third, as a performer, McGuinn is relaxed, confident, and in good form. His voice actually sounds better now than it did with the Clarence White Byrds, perhaps due to lack of substance abuse. His stories are familiar but a nice part of the experience. He seems to have a good rapport with the audience (from the photo, mostly old folks like me!) and plays guitar as well as ever. Fourth, I wonder if he ever gets tired of doing the same songs over and over after fifty years. He shortens many of the songs in his setlist--that may mean he's either avoiding tedium or is assuming his audience just wants a taste. Finally, McGuinn has expressed that he wants to continue giving concerts as long as he can, like Segovia (whom I saw at past 70 years old in my university). Judging from the this concert, Roger McGuinn still has many more concerts to perform before appreciative audiences. Thanks for this upload, R--B.
The stuff you're putting up is brilliant, Thanks :)
