Back From Rio (weird title, as he was never there) is one of McGuinn's best solo albums and came hot on the heels of the first Byrds Box Set and the Byrds' induction into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall Fame. Tom Petty's influence is felt throughout the CD, but the sound is unmistakably McGuinn/Byrds. In fact, this set is evenly divided between Byrds songs and Back From Rio and Tom Petty appears halfway through. The songs are well-chosen and the band plays them well, although the 12-string is not as prominent in the concert as on the record. McGuinn seemed supercharged in this period, and although Back From Rio didn't make him a household name, it got good reviews if I remember right and had a decent commercial success for an artist whose main work was in the 60's. McGuinn's next studio album (Limited Edition) didn't come out until much later, but it was also one of his best--certainly better than his most recent studio effort. A very appreciated upload, so thanks R--B.
