ReplyDeleteI sometimes feel that the loss of David Crosby did more to harm the Byrds than the loss of Gene Clark. True, Crosby was often insufferable as a person, but he did more to expand the musical horizons of the group than Clark did. His ventures into open tuning, jazz and Indian music led the Byrds into a new direction after the departure of Clark and the dead end of folk-rock, and his first solo album was a fine, moody set of songs. I wasn't so moved by his CS&N work in general, but he had his moments. This concert shows two things--that David Crosby was willing to take risks, both as a songwriter and singer. and that he sounds better with a group. One other thing is that he comes across quite well in between songs, showing wit, humor and a sense of theatre. A good listen from an unfairly-maligned musician. Thanks, Dave. Thanks, Rocking--Byrd.
